SERGEI PROKOFFIEF
“Dance of the Knights”

9.00

Prokofiev wrote a ballet based on Williams Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet”. “Dance of the Knights” – otherwise known as “Montagues and Capulets” – is a scene from act II of the ballet, depicting the fateful encounter between the two warring clans. With its strong horns, stirring bass, and dramatic string theme on top of it, this composition became one of the most popular works by Prokofiev. A great addition to a school orchestra program, as it allows to choose a soloist amongst the orchestra.

Description

Prokofiev wrote a ballet based on Williams Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet”. “Dance of the Knights” – otherwise known as “Montagues and Capulets” – is a scene from act II of the ballet, depicting the fateful encounter between the two warring clans. With its strong horns, stirring bass, and dramatic string theme on top of it, this composition became one of the most popular works by Prokofiev. In the decades since its premiere, “Dance of the Knights” has become an iconic work in its own right. Selections have been excerpted for film and television, sampled by musicians like Robbie Williams and Sia, movies like “Caligula” and “The Apprentice”, and used for the video games like “Civilization V.”

HomeOrchestra arrangements of classical music standards is a very desirable addition to a school orchestra repertoire. It allows to choose a member of any group – keyboards, strings, woodwinds or brass – and give them an unprecedented opportunity to shine as a soloist of a symphonic orchestra from the youngest age!
