One of Peter Tchaikovsky’s most enduring legacies is his ballet “The Nutcracker”. It is a Christmas story in which young Marie Stahlbaum’s favorite toy, the Nutcracker, comes alive and, after defeating the evil Mouse King in battle, becomes a Prince and whisks her away to a magical kingdom populated by dolls. In Act 1 of the ballet there is a scene where parents and children are gathered around the beautiful Christmas tree. Presents are given out , a march music is played, and wooden soldier-toys are marching across the living room, while children stand in awe.
