Description

Symphony No.5 is arguably the most frequently performed symphony ever, not only by Beethoven. First performed in the Vienna Theater, the work achieved its prodigious reputation soon afterwards. It was described as “one of the most important works of the time”. The distinctive four note motif “ta-ta-ta-taaaaaa” has been referred to as “fate motif”, a representation of “Fate knocking at the door” – that’s how Beethoven himself described this motif, according to his secretary Anton Schindler. The motif recurs throughout the entire symphony, in different keys and sometimes reversed, reminding us about the main contrast between the urgency of 3 quick notes and ominous freezing of motion in the long note. Schindler conveys the idea behind it – “the music starts with a wild outburst of energy but immediately crashes into a wall”.
