Description

“Moonlight sonata” is a popular name for a piano sonata n.14, one of Beethoven’s most popular compositions for the piano, in fact it was very popular already during his life. Beethoven wrote this piece when he was in his early thirties, and he dedicated it to his pupil, a young countess Giulietta Giucciardi. The name “Moonlight Sonata” was created by a German music critic Ludwig Rellstab, and arose much debate in later years. Some found that the mournful pace of this music more resembled funeral march, rather then romantic moon shining on the lake – Rellstab’s allusion. However, the name stuck and this work is still known to this day as “Moonlight Sonata”, and will forever remain amongst classical music standards.
