Description

The “pavane” derives from “padovana” – meaning “from Padua”, a province in Italy – is a slow processional dance common in Europe during the 16th century. An alternative explanation is that it derives from the Spanish “pavón” meaning “peacock”. Although the dance is often associated with Spain, it is most certainly of Italian origin. Gabriel Faure’s “Pavane” is the most popular pieces of this genre. It’s slow steady tempo, rich and sad melody has earned a significant place in music of impressionism. Sergei Diaghilev used it in his famous “Russian Ballets” in Paris, it can be heard in many modern films such as “Sex and the City”, it was also used for BBC’s coverage of 1998 FIFA World Cup.
