Description

Edward Grieg became a great champion of Norwegian music, art and theater. This is why the great Norwegian writer Henrik Ibsen asked Grieg to write music for his theatrical play “Peer Gynt”. The story of a young man, a son of once rich merchant who lost all his fortune, leaving young Peer and his mother to live in poverty. Peer wants to restore his father’s good name and fortune, and embarks upon a journey around the world, visiting many distant countries where he meets some real and some fairy characters. “In the Hall of the Mountain King” is a scene where Peer Gynt is day-dreaming, and in his fantasy enters the hall of troll’s King, living in depths of a mountain. The scene’s introduction reads: “There is a great crowd of troll courtiers, gnomes and goblins. Their King sits on his throne, with crown and scepter, surrounded by his children and relatives. Peer Gynt stands before him. There is a tremendous uproar in the hall.” The melody starts slowly and “cripplingly”, repeats over and over again, each time growing louder and more savage.
